About this flying site

Nice and beautiful flying site for local and XC flights (nice but techical). particularly suitable when a high pressure area is over alps which makes it hard to fly in other lower flying sites due to inversion. In spring the conditions may be very strong and turbulent. This flying site is often used by local PG scools for intermediate flights.

Take-off

1) At colle de Finestre. Any place around is OK. The best to takeoff on the north from parking (from the road of the footpath) 2) any suitable place a little walk up from the plain

Landing

Any suitable place on the plain. Avoid landing close to the livestock. Please consider that landing is in the park territory, and only Peter Pan flying school has a official agreement to use the main plain for landing. Forest rangers may want to verify this. In any case you can land any time little bit lower at landing site of Pian dell' Alpe. In low season usually landing on plain is not a problem.

Access and parking

Just 2 ways to get there. 1) From Pinerolo take the road towards Sestriete, then approx 2km after Fenestrelle take directions towards Usseaux and then Colle di Fenestrelle. Once reached the big altiplane (around 1600m alt) you are there at landing site. Takeoff small drive up. 2) From Susa take directions towards Meana di Susa, follow the indications towards Colle di Finestre. After going up for a while the road will become a gravel road but is is OK for any standard car. Once reached the mountain pass (approx 2100m) you are there at takeoff. Caution: this roadis officially closed from january to end of may. However due to presence of snow it may be inaccessible already from end of october.

Local weather notes

Do not fly with foen or northerly winds. Extremly dangerous. Always check the wether forecast before and pay attention to pressure difference between France and Italy. In case of westerly wind, the wind direction and intensity may seem OK at takeoff but actually there is a huge rotor on leeward side of the mountain.
