Planning information for Moorfoots
Take-off
An altimeter set to current QNH should be carried due to the prescence of airspace above 3500 feet. With optimum soaring conditions it is possible to launch below the road otherwise cross the road and walk up hill approximatly 40m to a level platform called Wull Muir. In light conditions walk west along a track past an old quarry to Launch on
Broad Law
or Torfichen Hill.
XC Tips:
If considering XC airspace above 3500 feet must be opened in accordance with the
Letter of Agreement here
and note carefully the altitude limits which step up gradually as you fly SE until clear of the Scottish TMA
Top Landing Notes:
Top landing straightforward anywhere above the road.
Bottom Landing Notes:
Anywhere in front of the hill. Take care during lambing season. Beware that the land below the road slopes away at 1:7 so you may have a long walk.
Access and parking
Park in the obvious lay by.
Please leave sufficient space for large articulated lorries turning into and out of the rocket range track. If you don't your car is liable to be damaged.
Getting there: 20kms SE of Edinburgh just off the A7 Edinburgh to Galashiels road. Take the B7007 Innerliethen road and
park at the crest
of the road before it turns south.
Local guidance
Hazards and cautions
Fast moving traffic on the B7007. Barbed wire fence at the top of the hill. Windfarm with a height of 1558 feet behind Wull Muir launch. There are often hill sheep which present no particular issue outside lambing season. However, if there are cattle in the area they are not used to human contact and easily spooked so pleas avoid.
Forecasts are planning aids, not safety clearance. Check current observations, official airspace and NOTAM information, local rules and your own experience before every flight.
