Planning information for Wether Fell

Take-off

Top Gate gives best access to highest and steepest part of the hill. Height: 1880 ft AMSL. 920ft top to bottom. 660ft to emergency landing field. Capacity: About twenty, although competitions have seen a lot more.

Access and parking

Drive along the Cam High Road (Roman Road) towards Bainbridge. Close the gate even if you find it open. Continue through the walled section, and park by the top (pedestrian) gate without blocking the track. Cars should only be parked on the NW side of the road to avoid obstructing farm vehicles etc.

Hazards and cautions

  • At the SW end of the ridge pilots can startle unsuspecting car drivers coming over the blind brow. Paragliders can bottom land in the field with the disused Mine Workings although this requires a slope landing technique. The Duerley Beck field is the preferred bottom landing field for hang gliders. Do not allow yourself to drift behind the Cam High Road wall. For hang glider top landings a crosswind tracking approach is recommended.
  • Pilots must close the gate at the start of the Cam High Road (Roman Road), even if it is open. Belted Galloway (cows) now grazing the take-off field, which probably explains why the farmers is so keen to keep the gate closed. Belted Galloways have a reputation for being quite feisty. It remains to be seen how they will react to hang glider and paragliders...
  • Although the track can be rough, do not drive on the grass - stick to the track until you reach the official parking place.
  • Hang glider emergency bottom landing field at West Duerley Farm now has some electric fences (and Belted Galloways) - take care.
  • Saturdays: avoid overflying any active shoots to the NE of take-off.
