Site briefing highlights

About this flying site

Hohe Wand is oriented SE and a rock cliff, so it is likely to produce good thermals all year round beginning in the mornings. It will often provide good lift until sundown.

Take-off

The takeoff is the 'Suedstart' used for SE-S winds, a cliff launch just a few 100 m south of the Postl-Restaurant. You should know what you are doing if you launch there.

Landing

Three landing zones available: 'Weide Kehre' just below the TO in the first serpentine, also used as training hill by the local flight school. 'Mautstation' approx 100m south of the toll station.

Access and parking

Take your car up the toll road (approx 3EUR/day) and park it at the 'Gasthof Postl' car park. Give others a ride up if you can. Usually you'd hitch hike back up after landing on one of the main LZ.

Local weather notes

SW-N may be flyable but very sporty if you like lee side thermaling. It is very common that the thermals overlay a wrong wind direction and turn it flyable. Stronger westerly or northerly winds (> 10km) are really dangerous here!

Flight rules

CTR Wien above 1850m. When leaving to the south or west, this will be at 2550m later. Do not XC towards Vienna, CTR is closing in and a lot of traffic around, too.
